Abstract

“And the Band played On” (1993), based on the best-selling book by the same name, portrays the beginning the AIDS epidemic, from the efforts to identify the cause of the new disease to the personal and political impact of the disease. Drs. Jim Curran and Harold Jaffe (played by Saul Rubinek and Charles Martin Smith in the film) were part of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention task force responsible for investigating a possible cause and the means of transmission of the previously unknown disease. This work forms the basis for our understanding of HIV/AIDS and for ultimately combatting the disease.

In their presentation, Curran and Jaffe used clips from the film to discuss the scientific, ethical, political, social, and cultural issues raised by their work.
