Abstract

Strode spent his last four years at his family estate, and on May 17, 1946, he died in the house where he had been born almost three quarters of a century earlier. His place in history was assured, according to the newspapers by his role as author of Virginia’s sterilization act and his victory in the case of Buck v. Bell. Strode was buried in the Amherst village cemetery, only a few steps from the grave of his friend Irving Whitehead.
